Our Exciting New Spending Features Make Your Budget Even More Customizable

You can now manually add in transactions, plus edit every detail of every charge that comes through — two of our top-requested capabilities.

Here at Origin, our budgeting and spending tools are among our most popular features, and we’re excited to share that we’ve launched some new capabilities that will make them even better. These include your top requests, like editing transactions, manual transaction addition, and more. All these elements will provide even more customization and more insights into your spending habits.

We are always striving to serve our members better, and we always take feedback to heart. From our direct conversations, comments on our subreddit, and via our customer support team, we’ve heard your feedback for even more customizable spending tools, and we answered! Your input is incredibly useful to us, so please continue to make your voices heard.

Without further ado, here’s what’s new with spending at Origin:

Edit transactions

Origin already allows you to recategorize every transaction, because you know your spending better than we do. Now you’ll have the ability to edit all other details too: the date, amount, description, and merchant, on top of the existing ability to split or hide transactions.

This comes in handy for keeping your budget as accurate as possible, especially when it comes to charges and deductions that don’t align with the dates you pay them — like September rent being taken out of your checking account on August 31, or your September electric bill in coming due in mid-October.

Plus, you’ll now be able to add memos to each transaction to help you remember important details that might impact your budget. For example, “Whole check for dinner with the girls. Sarah & Imani reimbursed via Venmo” or “Birthday present for John (bought six months early because it’s the perfect gift!)”

Here’s a peak at how this will look in the app:

Add transactions

Sometimes using cash can feel like you’re not spending any money because there’s no record of it on your credit or debit card statement — which is a bit tricky when it comes to accurately tracking your spending. Now you can add those transactions in yourself, meaning you’ll get the entire picture of your (literal) cash flow, and be able to keep your budget up to date.

You can also manually add other transactions that, for whatever reason, don’t show up in your transaction report.

See “Everything else” in your budget

This new spending category allows you to investigate which of your transactions don’t fall into a typical budget category. Once you’re in this tab, you can sort everything into the correct categories and further customize your budget.

Like always, you can still set your budget in two clicks, and decide if you want to add category limits or not. Any transactions that aren’t automatically categorized show up in the new “Everything else” section, but some users were confused about that section’s clickability. We’ve now updated it so it’s abundantly clear, and when you double click into “Everything else,” you’ll see those uncategorized transactions and be able to sort them accordingly, or simply leave them as is — it’s your budget, after all!

More features to come…

We’re always working to give our members the tools you need and have asked for, so keep an eye out for these new capabilities over the next few months:

  • Adding investment holdings manually: Upcoming features will allow you to manually add in holdings that you haven't connected through account connection, and also add tickers for stocks and crypto in order to get live balance updates.

  • Custom spending rules: These will let you create and manage simple-to-advanced rules for automatically managing your transactions.

  • Bulk editing of spending transactions: You’ll be able to to select multiple transactions at once and re-classify them the same way. For example, if you’re regularly paying upfront for work charges that you’ll get reimbursed for, you can edit them all at once so they don’t impact your overall spending or net-worth numbers.

All of these new features will help you get an even more detailed, up-to-date look at your spending and your net worth. We’ve built them out in direct response to your feedback and requests, and we can’t wait to hear what you think about them!
