Americans plan to spend big on V-Day this year

Whoever said love isn’t about money clearly hasn’t checked the data — Americans are set to spend big on Valentine’s Day this weekend — proving that yes, money does in fact matter when it comes to romance. The National Retail Federation expects V-day spending to total almost $30 billion this year, yet another record that surpasses last year’s previous high of $27.5 billion — a 5% bump.

On average, lovers are set to budget almost $200 ($199.78) to spend on their sweetheart — that’s roughly 16% of the median weekly earnings (before taxes) of $1,204 — a sizable chunk of most consumers’ monthly budgets.

Overall, just a bit over half (55%) of Americans plan to actually participate in the holiday. That tracks — after all, almost half of Gen Zers are single, so this is largely a celebration for the older generations. But Valentine’s gifts aren’t just for a significant other; 58% of participants are also planning to get a little something for friends or family members, too — 35% are even getting a gift for their pets.

What are they buying? The usual. Candy comes in atop the list as the most common gift, with 56% going that route. It’s followed up by the usual suspects: Cards and flowers (41%), an evening out (39%), and jewelry (25%). Online remains the favorite method of acquiring the goods, with 38% sourcing their gifts from it. Department stores, discount stores, and specialty locations (like jewelry stores) follow suit.

Big Valentine’s Day spending moments tend to get all the attention, but for couples, the bigger shift often comes from how money is managed the other 364 days of the year. Origin’s Partner Access lets members add their partner to their account for free — giving both people a shared view of spending, saving, and long-term goals.
